I have attended (Baptist) gthering from my brother before. It is just the same. The focus is at the singing part and the reviewing part (the third part you mention)
I have also attended Catholic gathering from my auntie. It is just the same. The focus is on the middle part with an explanation and reading of bible. The core difference is there is also a lot of ceremony going on for Catholic.

As an atheist, I think the Catholic congregation is easiest to endure as there are quite a few intelligent fellows to meet after all the bullsh-t. (In another word, it is worth the sh-t)

On a side note. As I said earlier, if you manage to meet her in person, your problem with your girlgriend may have a solution. A hug or a kiss will melt the wall like hydrogen peroxide to rotting inflammation on the skin.
I think her "teachers" know it and intentionally split you 2 whenever they can, put a "blocker" whenever they can't.
