In 1983, the 17th Conférence Générale des Poids et Mesures adopted a standard value, 299,792,458 m/s for the speed of light. This in turn defines the length of a meter in terms of the speed of light, so that further refinements in the current experimental value of the speed of light actually would just refine the definition of a meter.
