well...not really...they are saying that the egg that will hatch into the first "chicken" is laid by an ancestor that is slightly different than the first "chicken"...in that sense...the first "chicken egg" always has to come before the first "chicken"...
considering a chicken is diplod...the sets of chromosomes that make up the first chicken must came from a father that is not quite a chicken (lacking the mother-side chromosomes) and a mother that is not quite a chicken (lacking the father-side chromosomes)...
so the mother that laids the egg is not quite a chicken yet...but the egg have both sets of chromosomes from each parent side to have the potential to hatch into the first chicken...therefore...the egg of the first chicken must come before the first chicken
