The face in the clouds: British tourist spots spooky smirk above Venice church
A British tourist stranded in Venice by the volcanic ash crisis took this extraordinary picture of a ghostly face in the clouds above a famous church.
Charles Wordsworth was walking past the Santa Maria della Salute church in Venice, Italy, when he decided to take a photograph.
When he checked his camera 20 minutes later he noticed he had captured a 'demonic' face in a cloud formation above the 17th century church.
Charles, who works as a private tutor and lives near Goathland on the North Yorkshire Moors, took the picture on April 16 as the volcanic ash crisis broke across Europe.
He said: 'My first thought was "how strange". I showed it to my brother Henry and he was quite spooked by it.
'It is quite interesting that it happened on the same day as the volcanic ash and it does appear to be smirking down at the church in a demonic way.
'It's certainly more spooky than Godly.'
Charles was due to travel home on April 17 but was delayed for several days by flight cancellations.
