The dress-code crackdown displayed by administrators at a French Catholic high school in Orléans on Thursday “is not acceptable,” according to board’s director of education, who apologized for the clothing blitz that singled out several girls.

Marc Bertrand issued a public statement on Saturday, a day after hundreds of students protested outside of Béatrice-Desloges high school condemning the inspections.

“All students must absolutely be treated with dignity and respect,” Bertrand said in the statement. “No student should be subject to such a check of their clothing and even less be challenged in front of their peers. The strategy employed by the school last Thursday unfortunately does not reflect these values which are very dear to the CECCE (Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est).”

Bertrand confirmed much of what students reported: staff took students, mostly girls, into the hallway to check the length of their shorts. Some students were asked to bend their knee to check if their shorts met the school dress code, which says the shorts and skirts must go down to at least mid-thigh.

No student was told to bend over and there were no shorts measurements taken with a ruler, Bertrand’s statement said.

Protesting students described their embarrassment being brought into the hall for a clothing inspection.

Bertrand said many students felt degraded and humiliated.

There was another layer of controversy when Ottawa police showed up. Officers arrested one boy, who they said didn’t go to the school, with trespassing and he was later released without charges.

According to Bertrand, police were at the protest for public safety.

“Many of the students dispersed into the adjacent street where vehicles were circulating at the point where the traffic was stopped,” Bertrand said. “The police services then arrived on the scene to ensure the safety of the students.”

A small group of students who don’t attend a school in the French Catholic board showed up to the protest, Bertrand said. Police intervened when they refused to cooperate, he said.

No student of Béatrice-Desloges was charged, Bertrand said.

According to Bertrand, the students “calmly returned to the school” after superintendent of education Jason Dupuis addressed them at 12:45 p.m.

Dupuis will be at the school again on Monday if students want to share their concerns.

“The administration of the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est is sincerely sorry for this outcome and wishes to apologize to the students and families who have been disturbed by these events,” Bertrand said in his statement. “Follow-ups are underway with all of the CECCE schools to ensure that such a situation does not happen again.”

Grade 12 student Sophie Labbée said Saturday she’s grateful that the school board admitted what happened on Thursday was wrong.

“I think that we all appreciate the apology because I think this is the first time the school board has acknowledged that they did something wrong and it’s not an answer that protects themselves instead of students,” Labbée said. “I think we have to find out and see how legitimate it is, but it’s definitely a step in the right direction.”

Danika Verdon, a Grade 11 student, said she was slightly surprised to see an apology from the school board. Students still want to see consequences for teachers involved the dress code inspections, Verdon said.

The dress-code crackdown drew scorn from local politicians, who addressed it on social media.

Coun. Catherine Kitts, whose Cumberland ward includes the high school, questioned the police intervention and added, “School action against young women who were aggressively targeted for dress code violations also appears wildly inappropriate.”

Stephen Blais, the incumbent Liberal candidate for Orléans in the Ontario election, said, “Women should never be judged for what they wear.”

The French Catholic school board trustee for the zone, Dan Boudria, said, “Our students should be treated with dignity and respect. Such a situation should never happen again.”

Asked about the school controversy during his stop at the Tulip Festival on Saturday, Mayor Jim Watson said it was “very distressing” for the students and their families.

“I don’t have all of the facts and I’m not sure (about) a call for a police presence, but that’s the call by the school board and the police to make,” Watson said.

“My hope is that they come to some amicable solution so this thing doesn’t fester and ruin the good relationship teachers and students should have with one another.”

Students call for an end to high-school dress codes after girls singled out in incident at Ottawa Catholic school
MAY 15, 2022
Students and politicians are calling for an end to high-school dress codes after dozens of girls at a public Catholic school in Ottawa were singled out during an enforcement blitz that they say left them humiliated.

Students at École secondaire catholique Béatrice-Desloges said staff went classroom to classroom on a hot day last week to check whether shorts and skirts were long enough to meet the dress code requirements. Roughly 50 girls were sent to the principal’s office, where they were told to go home and change, or sift through the lost-and-found items for different clothes.

About 400 students protested outside the school on Friday, calling for changes to the dress code, and at one point Ottawa police officers were called in.

The Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est, or CECCE, dress code states that shorts and skirts must be of “an appropriate length” (mid-thigh) and that the underwear must not show, among other rules.

On Saturday, the board apologized to students and families for the method of enforcement, which targeted mostly girls – they were told to bend their knees upward to check whether their clothes were long enough – and promised to review its dress code policy.

“All students must be treated with dignity and respect. No student should be subjected to such a check on their clothing, let alone be questioned in front of their peers,” read a statement from Marc Bertrand, the board’s director of education.

Ottawa Councillor Catherine Kitts said she was taken aback by the incident, and noted it was hard to see how dress codes could exist without discriminating against girls, in particular.

“When it comes to a dress code at schools, there is always going to be an element of subjectivity that ultimately will unfairly target young women and girls,” Ms. Kitts said.

“Our message to our youth should not be that what they’re wearing is of greater concern than what they’re learning.”

Cloe Dumoulin, a 15-year-old student at the school, said she was told to zip up her top further because her tank top she was wearing made her chest distracting.

“They told me to cover up because I have a bigger chest area. … They claimed that it’s distracting to boys,” she said.

Ms. Kitts also said she was in touch with the Ottawa police chief and called for a review of their use of force while policing the student protest. A student from another school was arrested for trespassing, but was later released without charges or a ticket.

Farrah Khan, manager of Consent Comes First, an organization that supports victims of sexual assault at Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly known as Ryerson University), said dress code enforcement blitzes and subsequent protests take place every year when the weather gets hotter. She argued for them to be abolished.

“This is not a new issue, people have been calling out how draconian these dress codes are and how often they’re used to shame, blame and police young women’s bodies,” Ms. Khan said, adding that Black, Indigenous and transgender people are also disproportionately affected by dress codes.

“It feeds into rape culture – the idea that as a young woman, it’s your responsibility to protect yourself and take on the shame.”

CECCE superintendent Jason Dupuis said he’ll be at the school on Monday to meet with students, who are vowing to stage more protests if the school doesn’t change the dress code.

“It’s a question about finding this middle ground where students can feel like we can go to school without any sense of wondering whether what they’re wearing is okay,” Mr. Dupuis said.

Hailey Forster, a 15-year-old student who was made to change clothes last week, said it was upsetting that girls were unfairly targeted by the current rules.

“Some guys wear short shorts as well, it’s not just girls. Some guys wear muscle shirts and when guys show their shoulders it’s okay but not for the girls,” she said. “I just want equality.”

Pope at Canonization: Like new saints, let's live God's dream joyfully
During the canonization Mass, Pope Francis proclaims ten new saints in St. Peter's Square. In his homily, he reminds the faithful to recognize how God loves us unconditionally and how the path to holiness is "so simple" and requires seeing Jesus in others.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

As God had a dream for the new saints, He has a dream for our lives, which we are called to welcome with joy and live throughout our daily lives.
Pope Francis gave this encouragement during the Canonization Mass for ten new saints in St. Peter's Square on Sunday, reminding the some fifty-thousand faithful gathered in the Vatican how God has a dream for each and every one of our lives.

Canonization Mass
Canonization Mass
Canonization of 10 New Saints
At the beginning of the liturgical celebration, the Pope proclaimed ten new saints: Titus Brandsma; Lazzarus Devasahayam; César de Bus; Luigi Maria Palazzolo; Giustino Maria Russolillo; Charles de Foucauld; Maria Rivier; Maria Francesca of Jesus Rubatto; Maria of Jesus Santocanale; Maria Domenica Mantovani.

The Holy Father began recalling how in today's Gospel according to St. John, Jesus told His disciples, “Even as I have loved you, so you must love one another."

Listen to our report:
This, the Pope said, is the legacy that Christ bequeathed to us, "the ultimate criterion for discerning whether or not we are truly His disciples, the commandment of love."

The Pope considered two elements of this Commandment: Jesus’ love for us, and the love He asks us to show to others.

Love, defines our being Christian
Jesus loved us so much, the Pope reminded, that He gave the total gift of Himself.
“Let us never forget this. Our abilities and our merits are not the central thing, but rather the unconditional, free and unmerited love of God.”

Our Christian lives, the Pope said, "do not begin with doctrine and good works, but with the amazement born of realizing that we are loved, prior to any response on our part."

Pope: 'May the new Saints inspire solutions for peace'
The Pope warned that the world frequently tries to convince us that we are valued only for what we can produce, but yet the Gospel reminds us that we are loved.  Being loved, he highlighted, is an integral part of our Christian identity and our strength.

Rethinking the meaning of holiness
Acknowledging this truth requires a conversion in the way we often think of holiness.

"At times, by over-emphasizing our efforts to do good works," the Pope observed, "we have created an ideal of holiness excessively based on ourselves, our personal heroics, our capacity for renunciation, our readiness for self-sacrifice in achieving a reward.  In this way, we have turned holiness into an unattainable goal.  We have separated it from everyday life, instead of looking for it and embracing it in our daily routines."

“Being disciples of Jesus and advancing on the path of holiness means first and foremost letting ourselves be transfigured by the power of God’s love.”

The love that we receive from the Lord, the Pope said, is the force that transforms our lives, and opens our hearts and enables us to love.
"In practice, what does it mean to live this love? " the Pope asked.  "To love means this: to serve and to give one’s life.  To serve, that is, not to put our own interests first: to clear our systems of the poison of greed and competitiveness; to fight the cancer of indifference and the worm of self-referentiality; to share the charisms and gifts that God has given us."

Specifically, we should ask ourselves, “What do I do for others?”

Small acts of daily love
Giving one's life, the Pope said, is about more than simply offering something of ours to others, "it is about giving them our very selves." It requires, he underscored, "surmounting our selfishness in order to make our lives a gift, by looking after the needs of those at our side, by making an effort to help others, or just by listening patiently, spending time with them, making a phone call."

Holiness, does not consist of a few heroic gestures, but of many small acts of daily love.

“Are you called to the consecrated life? Be holy by living out your commitment with joy. Are you married? Be holy by loving and caring for your husband or wife, as Christ does for the Church. Do you work for a living? Be holy by labouring with integrity and skill in the service of your brothers and sisters. Are you a parent or grandparent? Be holy by patiently teaching the little ones how to follow Jesus. Are you in a position of authority? Be holy by working for the common good and renouncing personal gain (Gaudete et Exsultate, 14).”

Our calling, the Pope said, is to serve others and offer our lives without expecting anything in return.

God's dream for your life
“That was how our fellow travellers canonized today lived their holiness. By embracing with enthusiasm their vocation – as a priest, as a consecrated women, as a lay person – they devoted their lives to the Gospel. They discovered an incomparable joy and they became brilliant reflections of the Lord of history.”

The Holy Father called on faithful to follow their example, in pursing our own call to holiness,  a form of holiness all our own, "not a photocopy of someone else's holiness."

Pope Francis concluded by reminding the faithful that "God has a dream for your life.  Welcome that dream, and pursue it with joy."

村里的几位居民曾看到神父带着孩子在他家赤身裸体地走来走去;也看到年轻人在做园艺的时候除了简单的围裙,其他的什么也没穿;

Pope expresses closeness to people with Cornelia de Lange Syndrome
Pope Francis draws attention to the rare genetic disorder known as Cornelia de Lange Syndrome, and encourages an Italian volunteer association in its efforts to raise awareness.
By Devin Watkins
Cornelia de Lange Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder which affects around 1 in 10,000 to 30,000 newborns and leads to slow growth, intellectual disability, and bone abnormalities in the upper body.

Pope Francis met on Saturday with members of the “Cornelia de Lange Association”, an Italian non-profit association, to spread the word about the genetic condition.

He especially greeted an Italian man named Vincenzo Placida, who ran nearly 700 km to arrive at the papal audience.

Mr. Placida began his journey in Vigonovo, near the northern city of Venice, to raise awareness about the Syndrome, by which his daughter Valentina is affected, and to raise money for the association dedicated to helping people like her.

Near to the most vulnerable
The Pope expressed his closeness to all who live with Cornelia de Lange Syndrome.

“This rare genetic condition causes discomfort and great difficulties for those who are affected by it and for their family members. I express my closeness and understanding to them, and encourage them not to grow disheartened by the obstacles they face in their journey.”

Pope Francis also thanked the Association’s volunteers for their work to be near “to our most vulnerable brothers and sisters.”

“A culture of solidarity offers a concrete expression of how to build a fraternal society, which has the human person as its center,” he said.

Making society more Christian
The Pope added that volunteers demonstrate the love of God and love of neighbor, in response to Jesus’ invitation in the Gospel.

“The charity of God makes us realize that others are brothers and sisters to be welcomed. For this reason, as you volunteers carry out your caring activities, you also contribute to giving a more human and more Christian face to our society.”

Pope Francis wrapped up his greetings to the Cornelia de Lange Association with an encouragement to serve others in a spirit of tenacity and unity.

“May you be witnesses to goodness and tenderness!” he said.
Pope Francis: Church a 'field hospital for vulnerable'
Pope Francis encourages members of the French social organization "Village of Francis" to continue embracing the Church "as a field hospital" and to look to Christ as their model.
By Deborah Castellano Lubov

Jesus Christ alone fills our thirsty hearts.

Pope Francis stressed this when receiving inhabitants and participants of the Village de Francois in the Vatican on Saturday.

Addressing those gathered as 'friends' and saying he was happy to welcome them, the Pope admitted he initially had some doubts about the project.

“When Étienne Villemain [the Executive Director], "the enfant terrible," who brought this project together with so many others, first told me about it, I could not help but tell him that I was wary of what the Holy Spirit might inspire in him... And now I am happy to see that the project is going ahead!”

According to its website, the Village de François develops and runs innovative shared living spaces, i.e. the 'villages,' in France, which bring together vulnerable people and those who care for them around three axes: living together; economic activity; and integral ecology.

The team behind the "Village de François" is composed of a team of social entrepreneurs, "green tech" company managers, association leaders, urban and landscape architects, and eco-builders.

Church as a 'field hospital'
"The Village de François," the Pope said, "is an ecclesial place that goes out of the usual framework" to propose something else.

"It is the Church as a 'field hospital,' concerned more with those who suffer than with defending its own interests, taking the risk of novelty, in order to be more faithful to the Gospel," he said.

The definition of the world as a global "village" has become a commonplace; yet, he lamented that so many people "are left on the margins of this so-called village, reserved for a privileged elite."

"I hope that the Village de François," the Pope said, "will contribute to rediscovering what a true village is: a fabric of concrete human relations, in mutual support, in attention to those in need, in the coexistence of generations and in the concern to respect the Creation that surrounds us."

Pope Francis meets members of Village de Francois
Pope Francis meets members of Village de Francois
The Village de François, the Pope observed, was imagined on the basis of the conviction that 'everything is linked', noting they have this "concrete experience of this by associating the environment and respect for human life from conception to natural death, prayer and fraternity, and also by bringing different generations together."

“I count on your testimony to show that life according to the Gospel is found in the balanced consideration of all these aspects.”

The Pope warned against our tendency "to mobilise ourselves with great zeal for very legitimate causes," but then lose sight of the bigger picture.

"Concrete experience however shows us," he underscored, "that it is the human person as a whole that needs to be loved, accompanied and included in a network of enriching and constructive relationships."

Jesus should be our model
The Pope went on to say such relationships have "an absolute model" and "a source" from which they can develop.

“You have settled in an ancient Trappist abbey: I see in this as a call for you to place at the centre of your experience, in addition to a simple and laborious life, the care and development of the inner life, of the relationship with Jesus Christ, Who alone can fill our thirsty hearts.”

When Jesus, in the Gospel according to St. John, says: "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life," the Pope observed that Christ himself experienced, in first person, what they realise in the Village de François.

Jesus, the Holy Father pointed out, "was frail, in His mother's arms and on the Cross; He worked as a craftsman; He lived in the rhythm of the seasons and of nature; He grew up in a village where generations mingled; He prayed, forgave and loved His neighbour."
“To you, I entrust Him as a model and an inspiration in your project and your daily life.”

Pope Francis concluding by thanking them and reassuring them of his prayers on this "challenging, yet joyful and liberating journey."

Wives of Ukrainian soldiers appeal to Pope Francis for help
Two Ukrainian women, whose husbands are fighting Russia’s invasion of their homeland, meet with Pope Francis and describe to journalists their husbands’ plight in the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol.
By Salvatore Cernuzio and Francesca Merlo

Katheryna Prokopenko and Yulya Fedosiuk came to the Vatican and met with Pope Francis on the sidelines of the Wednesday General Audience.

Their soldier husbands are holed up in the Azovstal steel plant, which has become the last holdout of Ukrainian forces in Mariupol and the focus of heavy Russian shelling.

The two women met the Pope for only a few moments, but later told journalists they were “historic” ones.

Hoping for help
Katheryna and Yulya hail from Kyiv and Lviv but are making their way to Germany as refugees.

They spoke to reporters as representatives of the 500-odd wives of Ukrainian soldiers fighting in the steel plant, saying their hearts are weighed down by worry.

“I can't even explain what I felt at that moment,” said Yulya, describing their encounter with the Pope. “I was a little nervous, because it was a historic moment, and we all hope that it will help save the lives of our husbands and soldiers in Azovstal. We hope this meeting will give us a chance to save their lives."

She and Katheryna expressed their hopes that Ukrainian fighters can be evacuated from Mariupol to another country. If given sufficient guarantees, the soldiers say they are “are ready to lay down their arms.”

"We are all ready to help them, I hope,” said Yulya. “We will do everything we can to save them.”

Situation in Azvostal steel plant
The two young Ukrainian women said they spoke to Pope Francis in English and offered him details about the situation in Azvostal, where about 700 soldiers are wounded, with gangrenous or amputated limbs.

Many, they said, have died but have not received a Christian burial. Their bodies are decomposing in the extensive tunnel system under the steel plant.

The women added that many civilians remain trapped underground there, mostly families of soldiers who are afraid of being evacuated. They fear their husbands will be tortured and killed.

Scarce supplies
The soldiers face a scarcity of supplies, with little food, water, and medical supplies. Mariupol has no functioning hospitals due to Russia’s extensive shelling campaign on the port city.

"The situation is terrible, and we all feel it,” said the Ukrainian women. “We are following from here. Every day we receive terrible news from our husbands.”

One called his wife Tuesday night. She said Wednesday she would do anything to save his life.

"I apologize for being so nervous," she told reporters, adding that two days ago her husband asked her to look up an article on how to live without water as long as possible. "That is their situation!"

Pope’s promise of prayers
Katheryna and Yulya asked the Pope for help so that humanitarian corridors could be set up in the near future to evacuate those who remain in Mariupol.

Pope Francis assured them of his prayers and shook hands with the two women. They pleaded with the Pope to visit Ukraine, perhaps Zaporizhzhia, or talk to Russian President Vladimir Putin to mediate an end to the "cruel" war.

Appeal to the international community
The two Ukrainian women also appealed to the international community to form "a strong coalition" that would allow Mariupol soldiers and civilians to reach a third country.

Asked which country, they said, "It depends on those who have the courage to take them in. It could be Turkey, Switzerland, or any other country that wants to be the first to evacuate, help, and rescue them. We are waiting for that. If our husbands could go somewhere else, we would go with them. Then we hope to go back to Kyiv and the Ukraine we love. It is important for us; we don't want to be refugees."
